The Two Most Common Mistakes Golfers Make

Posted by Marita on 23 septiembre 2011

Golfers tend to make the same mistakes over and over. They aim too far to the right and use a weak grip. Here are some helpful hints to help you avoid the two most common mistakes golfers make.

The number one mistake golfers make is aiming too far to the right. Even players who are aware of this tendency will start aiming farther and farther right as the round progresses, or as stress mounts. Tour players spend hours working on alignment. Aiming to the right forces the player to come over or around and swat at the ball with their hands, producing all manner of ugly shots, but primarily a weak slice to the right.

Even though the player misses most shots to the right, he or she will not respond by aiming farther left, but surprisingly, will aim even farther right. There is something about standing to the side of the ball that distorts the player’s alignment perspective, and if you stand behind the first tee at the golf course, you will see virtually every player aim to the right.

The second most common mistakes golfers make is a grip that is too weak, meaning that the left palm is too far underneath the club, and the right hand is on top of the club. In a sense, now, the golfer is aiming even farther right, since the club will tend to open up at impact. This leads to even weaker shots even if the ball is hit solidly.

Most golfers instinctively hit the ball with their hands and arms, but not their bodies. Subconsciously, they fear hitting the ball with their bodies because they know they are risking missing the ball completely.

If golfers truly want to improve, they must accept the possibility that, for a while, some of their shots will be truly awful. But, after a short time, they will be hitting the ball farther and straighter than ever before. And the solution is simple:

Here are four tips to avoid the most common mistakes golfers make:

1. Before you hit the shot, check to make sure that the line across your toes points left of your target (the reason you want your toes left of the target, rather than at your target, is that body lines should be parallel to the target lines, not intersect them).

2. Turn your grip so that the back of your left hand and the palm of your right hand point more skyward than you are comfortable with.

Now you will hit lots of shots fat and/or to the left and you will curse me until you learn to get your body through before your hands.

4. Let me say that again because it is very important. You WILL hit shots fat and/or to the left until you learn to release your body before you release your hands. Now you will have more leverage than ever before and your swing will be simpler and more efficient. And as a bonus, you will get more exercise!

You might be reluctant to implement these changes to your golf game, especially knowing that you will hit some bad shots. Remember, professional golfers change their swings and they know they will hit bad shots until they are able to succeed using their “new” swing. Follow this advice and you too will be able to avoid the two most common mistakes golfers make.

Golf fans know the meaning of life on the road

Posted by Marita on 19 septiembre 2011

It takes considerable skill to play professional golf, but a group of Navistar LPGA Classic fans from around the country arrived here a few days ago after displaying ability, agility and stamina of their own.

They are motor home owners who negotiated huge vehicles along interstates, down two-lane roads and in downtown traffic in big cities such as Los Angeles.

Their ability to operate motor homes almost as big as a Greyhound bus in all kinds of weather — including rain, sleet and snow — prove they can drive with the best without a golf club in their hands.

Take Caroline Banks and her husband, Dan Davis, for instance. They pulled into a special parking site adjacent to the Robert Trent Jones Capitol Hill course after a long, tiring trip from upstate New York.

The couple had traveled about 1,500 miles from North Hudson, N.Y., in the Adirondack Mountains. They’ll have another 500 miles to go after the tournament ends when they arrive at Texarkana, Texas, where relatives live.

“We love what we do and have been living in motor homes for years,” said Banks. “We’ve owned houses, but there is nothing quite like what we have.”

She and Davis, who have been married for 38 years, met at Texas Instruments and, after they retired, began to hit the road in motor homes. Monaco is a sponsor of the golf tournament.

Their long drive to the Monaco RV rally held each year to coincide with the Navistar LPGA Classic in Prattville was one of many long trips they take throughout the year. They’ll be going to another one in Kansas soon.

When they are not on the road, they spend several months as “Work Campers” at motor home facilities. Banks handles the reservation desk while her husband does maintenance work.

“It feels like freedom out there,” said Davis. “There are no ties, no restrictions. We just hit the open road. We’re ‘homeless’ and we love it.”

According to Banks, their 2005 Monaco Executive model cost “between $400,000 and $500,000″ when they bought it new. They said they got a “good deal” by trading in another Monaco that was in good condition.

How To Choose The Best Golf GPS

Posted by Marita on 16 septiembre 2011

The word best is a commonly misused term nowadays, and there is no exception when it comes to finding the best golf GPS. This is not made any easier by the fact that new models emerge every day, all of which claim ultimate superiority. A sales person may convince you to buy a particular model, but all they may be after is the commission they get as a percentage of total sales.

You may browse the web looking for the best products, but then again you would not know whether they are the latest models available. To find the most appropriate equipment, you first have to decide on what information really matters to you in a game. Do you simply want an aid to measure the distance between you and the hole, or further assistance with the best possible strategy?

As per the USGA ruling in Decision 14-3/0.5, golfers are allowed to use devices that measure distance only. Consequently, most courses have incorporated this into their regulatory codes. In a tournament, however, you should first confirm with relevant authorities on the use of such aids when playing.

Golf GPS gadgets highly addictive; frequent users often feel lost on golf courses when they go without them. These golfing aids come in different brands and designs; it may therefore be difficult for you to make an appropriate choice. Nevertheless, there exist some criteria to evaluate these gadgets, based on 7 principal aspects.

The first of these is setup. Most GPS devices require the installation of software on a computer. Desired course maps are then downloaded to the computer, which then synchronizes the device with these maps. Others are readily usable right from the point of purchase.

One has to check that their golf course is available on the device in consideration. GPS devices from established manufacturers usually have more courses available.

The complexity of the device is another issue to be considered. Are you able to use the device without too much strain? It is really not necessary to buy a complicated gadget which would be difficult to use when playing golf.

One also needs to ensure that the course map is well elaborate in detail. Most devices will display several features of the putting green, such as bushes, sand traps and roughs. The gadget could also display the distance to the front, center and back of the green.

You also need to consider the features that you would want in a device. Closely evaluate the colors, screen configuration, ability of maps to rotate depending on your location on the course and static tracking ability. Some devices also offer electronic score cards.

A GPS device is only as good as its accuracy. This widely varies across different models. You need to get yourself a device that will not leave you stranded on an extensive golf course.

Last but not least, you have to compare the cost against value. A GPS device has to provide good value for its price. Remember that price is not necessarily an indication of quality; there is no point in stretching your budget under the notion that you are making a better choice. Stick to what you can afford, rather than what you desire.

Other factors to consider in choosing the best golf GPS device are things like waterproof ability, battery life, and warranty and customer service availability.

There are so many golf GPS units to choose from these days that it can be hard to narrow down the list. If you need help in choosing your new GPS unit then our golf GPS comparison and see what 3 units rated out the highest in our reviews. The Tools Necessary for the Game of Golf

Posted by Marita on 12 septiembre 2011

I remember as a kid growing up watching Jack Nicholas play golf on TV and even had the pleasure of seeing and meeting Nancy Lopez in person and thinking, how hard could golf really be? You have someone to carry your clubs and to consult your best move out there on the course. Well, at the age of 7 and of course later on as an adult, I soon realized that it was much more difficult.

Golfing is one of those sports where you would think you wouldn’t need to be fit to play. Just look at some of the golfers from the past, not the best fit people I’ve ever seen. Well, since I am not a pro and I don’t have a caddy or a cart, 18 holes of pushing/pulling a golf bag around and at the same time trying to hit a golf ball, one may change their mind about the level of fitness required to play the sport.

When you do carry or pull your own clubs, they say a round of golf is like walking four to seven miles. Of course this doesn’t take into consideration the actually swinging of the club and the squatting and bending that you do throughout the round. Well if one is not in decent shape, I could see a pretty miserable morning or two the next day. This is probably why despite being a recreational sport, being in shape is not just a plus, but a requirement. Today’s professionals hire trainers to get their bodies in the best shape. Take a look at the sport today, many of the men and women on the tour are in top physical condition. They want to play there best and make sure that their bodies are ready for the grueling rounds that golf has to offer.

We have touched on the physical, but there is a mental part to the game as well. Understanding the course, the way the wind blows, the way the grass is cut, the position of the holes on the greens, and I am sure so much more goes into successfully navigating the sport. In addition to all of that, you have the metal part of your own subconscious. Many break downs that can occur during a tournament, aren’t necessary physical, but mental. Feeling overly confident or not confident enough, or losing your concentration. All these things can and do happen to the best of us. The important thing is what you do after those moments. Do you pick yourself up or continue to bury yourself? I sometimes feel it is often harder to heal from a mental pain that a physical one, however at the end of the day with a mental breakdown the only thing bruised is your ego.

Ultimately when approaching the wonderful game of golf, you want to be fit mentally and physically so that you do your best. I argue that by truly enjoying the game and having a great time, you will feel your best!

Easy Step To Stop Leaking Power From Your Golf Swing

Posted by Marita on 9 septiembre 2011

Stop Leaking Power From Your Golf Shots:
Power robbing ‘leaks’ in your golf swing can be costing you 50 or more yards on every shot.
One of the biggest power leaks that most golfers suffer from is called ‘throw away’ by the pros. But it is nothing more than breaking your wrists before impact. This can sometimes be hard to visualize so I’ve included some pictures.
The Science Behind The Golf Shot:
‘Throw Away’ may not seem like a big deal, but let me ask you to remember way back when you where in high school physics and you learned about torque. Torque=Force X Length of Lever
In reality it is a little more complicated, but this simplified version is good enough to understand how to maximize your golf swing.
So when you break down your wrists you are effectively cutting the length of the lever in half (not a good thing to do).
Why does breaking your wrists cut the lever in half? Well the lever is supposed to be your front arm plus the length of the golf club. Breaking your wrists before impact means the club alone is acting as the lever. This has the nasty side effect of also cutting your power in half.
So that was the science behind it but what it means to you is that ‘throw away’ or breaking your wrists is costing you tens of yards on every shot and it is really easy to fix.
Fixing ‘Throw Away’ in Your Golf Swing:
Fixing throw away doesn’t have to be complicated. In reality it is one of the simplest things in golf. Here’s how:
I always have people start with their chip shots. Practice locking your wrists in a flat left wrist bent right wrist position (opposite for you lefties). Now hit some chip shots with a wedge and see how it feels.
These chip shots should be super consistent because you are keeping your hands in a fixed in-line position. An added bonus of not breaking your wrists before impact is a major increase in consistency.
